KVM-De Liesvelden 24-02-20

This month we put grower Kwekerij de Liesvelden in the spotlight which is located in Poederoijen. Teunis Versteeg and his wife Evelien Versteeg are at the helm of the 3.7-hectare nursery. It is always busy at the nursery since they offer a diverse assortment all year round. Where the Helleborus is in the spotlight at fall, various perennials are grown seasonal.

The roots of nursery de Liesvelden
The parents of owner Teunis (Petra and Jielis Versteeg) started the company. Cut flowers and chicory were grown in the 1970s, and this changed to freesia cultivation around the 1980s. The nursery was then still in Brakel on the Liesveldsesteeg, where the name the Liesvelden comes from. Soon garden plants and shrubs were also grown and in 2015, the helm changed and the nursery moved to Poederoijen. The same year, Teunis and Evelien became the owners of the nursery and the nursery now consisted of one large greenhouse instead of three greenhouses at different locations.
The team now consists of ten employees who are strengthened by ten to fifteen flex workers during the season.

Primula & Zantedeschia
The plant of the month, the primula, is currently ready to leave the nursery. The Denticulata, Little Queen and the Gold Nugget belong to their assortment and are available in different colors. In addition, the Zantedeschia is an important product for the nursery. The plant is offered throughout the year with a total cultivation of 60,000 plants. The Zantedeschia is available in P12 and P15.

Helleborus
The Helleborus cultivation accounts for approximately half of the cultivation at the Liesvelden nursery. The Helleborus range consists of the following four types:
- Helleborus Christmas Carol - This Helleborus comes from the Winter Pearl Collection and is an early bloomer, you can enjoy it well before Christmas.
- Helleborus Advant Star - A plant with strong flowers and a strong plant structure and is a medium early bloomer.
- Helleborus White Shadow - This is a nursery's own selection and is characterized by upright large flowers that bloom early.
- Helleborus niger Preacox - As a late bloomer with its snow-white large flowers, it is a true original.

Sustainability
The nursery is in possession of the following MPS certificates: A +, SQ, Global Gap and Sedex. In addition, they use carbon-free pots and recycle water consumption. The nursery strives to get as much power as possible from its own plant, which results in using as few pesticides as possible so that the plant becomes extra strong.
